Ok, this advice may appear very evident on the outside…however I’m constantly astonished at just how often people make this exact same mistake time and time again.  Numerous people make the mistake of using the couch arm as a pillow whilst relaxing on the couch or watching television.

Please, don’t be tempted!

It’s a problem since the angle between the head, neck and shoulders can be far too sharp, triggering stress and fatigue of the ligaments, muscles and joints of your neck.  Contrary to a pillow, the couch arm doesn’t mould to your position and within a fairly short period of time can cause a fairly sore neck – particularly if you fall asleep!

It is always safer to avoid these positions rather than to risk the potential effects that can originate from assuming this type of uncomfortable neck posture.  If you happen to be tempted to lay on the couch, refrain from higher couch arms to rest your head on and ensure that the spine and neck are aligned as close to a straight line as possible and try to reduce the length of time that you’re in the uncomfortable position.
