Our approach to treating back pain involves distinctive manual therapies and the core control program, ensuring that your back possesses the strength and capacity to handle the pressures of everyday life.
There can be various reasons why you experience back pain, and these causes may not be limited to your back alone. We aim to determine these causes, devise a treatment plan tailored to your condition, and help you resume the activities you desire without any pain.
Back Pain Treatment Halesowen
Midlands Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic provides physio care for lower back pain and proudly services the local Halesowen community.
Lower back pain is an incredibly common condition, with up to 80% of the population experiencing back pain at some point in their lives. Although the underlying pathology of low back pain is usually not severe, it is a significant source of pain in the community and has a significant impact on the economy due to time taken off work. While most patients with back pain will recover within six weeks, a small number will develop chronic back pain and a gradual deterioration of functionality.
Causes of Back Pain
Back pain is usually caused by irritation or inadequate function of the bones, joints, ligaments, or muscles in your back. This irritation can be due to Vertebral dysfunction, a common condition that occurs when the spinal vertebrae compress or irritate the delicate nerve structures in your lower back.
Other causes of lower back pain include inflammatory arthritis (e.g. ankylosis spondylitis, Rheumatoid arthritis), and fractures due to osteoporosis. Back pain may also be ‘referred’ from another location.
Cancer (typically originating from another source, such as the prostate or lung), severe infections, and compression of the spinal cord are less common causes of low back pain.
Assessment of Back Pain
Your Physiotherapist will perform a detailed history, orthopaedic, neurological and spinal examination to determine the exact cause of your lower back pain. Other tests including x-rays and digital scanning may also be recommended.
Treatment for Back Pain
Physiotherapy treatment of low back pain focuses on restoring function to poorly moving spinal joints, as well as reducing muscle tension and increasing muscle strength. This results in improved movement, reduced pain and deceased nerve irritation.
Treatments are tailored to the individual case usually consisting of spinal and soft tissue mobilisation, core stabilisation advice, strengthening exercises, stretching and heat/cold therapy.
