About Neck Pain

If you are one of the many people dealing with neck pain, our proven Physiotherapy approach may be the solution you have been seeking.

Neck pain is a frequent issue, with roughly one in 10 individuals experiencing it at any given time. This is unsurprising when we take into account the lifestyle habits of today, such as spending extended periods of time in front of a computer, watching television for prolonged periods, and an increasing incidence of poor posture, particularly forward head posture.

Headaches, shoulder pain, TMJ or jaw pain, pins and needles in the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome, and upper back pain can all be caused by problems in the neck.

If you often experience any of the following symptoms, please contact us for a thorough assessment:

  • Persistent neck pain in the morning
  • Stiffness in the neck when reversing in the car
  • Clicking neck noise when turning
  • Continuous aching neck muscles
  • Tingling in the fingers or hands

Causes of Neck Pain

The most prevalent cause of neck pain is poor posture. To understand how poor posture affects the neck, we must first recognise the importance of proper spinal alignment.

Your head weighs about 5 kgs and in normal alignment it is very carefully balanced on top of your seven neck bones (vertebrae).  Your muscles work very hard to maintain this position and can easily withstand short periods of variation.  The problem arises when we assume awkward positions for prolonged periods, the fine balance is disturbed and the nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments and discs of your neck become strained and irritated.  In fact, the tension in your neck and shoulder muscles doubles for every 2-3 cm’s that your head is forward

Over time, the neck strain and pressure accumulates to a point where it becomes chronic and even the smallest changes in posture cause significant effects.  Coupled with the stresses and demands of modern life, it’s no surprise that neck pain is so common.

Whiplash, arthritis, and sports injuries are other common sources of neck pain.

Treatment for Neck Pain

If you’re experiencing neck pain, our Physiotherapy treatments offer a practical solution. After a thorough examination, including history, orthopaedic, neurological, and spinal tests, our skilled Physiotherapists will design a personalised treatment plan to reduce pressure, restore movement, and prevent further pain. The approach may include postural advice, spinal manipulation for joint mobility, massages to relieve muscle tension, neck exercises to promote movement, strengthening exercises, heat/ice therapy for pain relief, and a contoured pillow for optimal sleeping support.
