About Neck Pain

If you’re one of the many that suffers with neck pain, you will be pleased to know that our proven Physiotherapy approach may offer the solution you have been searching for.

Neck pain is a frequent issue, with roughly one in 10 individuals experiencing it at any given time. This is unsurprising when we take into account the lifestyle habits of today, such as spending extended periods of time in front of a computer, watching television for prolonged periods, and an increasing incidence of poor posture, particularly forward head posture.

Problems within the neck can also cause headache, shoulder pain, TMJ or jaw pain, pins and needles in the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome and upper back pain.

If you regularly experience any of the following symptoms, we encourage you to contact us for a comprehensive assessment:

  • Persistent neck pain in the morning
  • Stiffness in the neck when reversing in the car
  • Clicking sound in the neck when turning
  • Constant neck muscle aches
  • Tingling sensation in the hands or fingers

Causes of Neck Pain

Poor posture is by far the most common cause of neck pain. To understand the impact of poor posture, we must first consider why proper spinal alignment in the neck is crucial.

In a normal alignment, your head weighs approximately 5 kgs and is meticulously balanced on top of the seven vertebrae in your neck. Your muscles work tirelessly to maintain this position and can cope with short-term variations. However, assuming uncomfortable positions for extended periods can disturb the delicate balance, causing your neck’s nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments, and discs to become strained and irritated. For every 2-3 cm that your head is forward, the tension in your neck and shoulder muscles doubles.

As time goes by, the strain and pressure on the neck build up, resulting in chronic pain, and even the slightest alterations in posture can have significant repercussions. When combined with the stress and demands of modern-day living, it’s no surprise that neck pain is so prevalent.

Other common causes of neck pain include whiplash, arthritis and sporting injuries.
