Back Pain Treatment Stourbridge
Midlands Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic provides physio care for lower back pain and proudly services the local Stourbridge community.
As many as 80% of people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives, making it an extremely common condition. Although the underlying pathology of low back pain is typically not severe, it is a significant source of pain in the community and has a considerable impact on the economy due to work absenteeism. Although the majority of patients recover from back pain within six weeks, a small percentage may develop chronic back pain and a gradual decline in function.
Causes of Back Pain
Back pain is usually caused by irritation or inadequate function of the bones, joints, ligaments, or muscles in your back. This irritation can be due to Vertebral dysfunction, a common condition that occurs when the spinal vertebrae compress or irritate the delicate nerve structures in your lower back.
Other causes of lower back pain include inflammatory arthritis (e.g. ankylosis spondylitis, Rheumatoid arthritis), and fractures due to osteoporosis. Back pain may also be ‘referred’ from another location.
Low back pain caused by cancer (usually originating from another source such as the prostate or lung), severe infections, and spinal cord compression are uncommon conditions.

Assessment of Back Pain
To determine the exact cause of your lower back pain, your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough examination of your history, orthopaedic, neurological, and spinal functions. Additional assessments, such as x-rays and digital scans, may also be suggested.
Treatment for Back Pain
The physiotherapy treatment of low back pain concentrates on restoring function to spinal joints that are moving poorly, as well as reducing muscle tension and increasing muscle strength. As a result, there is improved movement, reduced pain, and decreased nerve irritation.
The treatments are customised to the individual case and generally consist of spinal and soft tissue mobilisation, advice on core stabilisation, strengthening exercises, stretching, and heat/cold therapy. Please get in touch with us to arrange your comprehensive lower back consultation, which will help identify the specific cause of your back pain and start a course of corrective treatment today!
