About Neck Pain
If you are one of the many people dealing with neck pain, our proven Physiotherapy approach may be the solution you have been seeking.
Neck pain is a prevalent issue, with approximately one in 10 people experiencing it at any given time. This is unsurprising when we consider the activities of modern life, such as extended periods of sitting in front of a computer, prolonged periods of watching television, and an increasing incidence of poor posture, especially forward head posture.
Headaches, shoulder pain, TMJ or jaw pain, pins and needles in the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome, and upper back pain can all be caused by problems in the neck.
If you regularly experience any of the following symptoms, we encourage you to contact us for a comprehensive assessment:
- Persistent neck pain in the morning
- Stiffness in the neck when reversing in the car
- Clicking neck noise when turning
- Constant aching of the neck muscles
- Tingling in the fingers or hands

Causes of Neck Pain
Neck pain is most commonly caused by poor posture. To comprehend how poor posture affects the neck, we must first understand the importance of correct spinal alignment.
In a normal alignment, your head weighs about 5 kgs and is carefully balanced on top of the seven vertebrae in your neck. Your muscles work diligently to maintain this position and can tolerate brief variations. However, assuming uncomfortable positions for extended periods can disrupt the delicate balance, causing your neck’s nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments, and discs to become strained and irritated. For every 2-3 cm that your head is forward, the tension in your neck and shoulder muscles doubles.
As time passes, the strain and pressure on the neck accumulate, resulting in chronic discomfort and even the slightest changes in posture can have significant effects. Along with the pressures and demands of modern life, it’s no wonder that neck pain is so prevalent.
Whiplash, arthritis, and sports injuries are other common sources of neck pain.
Treatment for Neck Pain
Physiotherapy is an effective method for treating neck pain, providing a comprehensive approach to care. After a thorough examination, including history, orthopaedic, neurological, and spinal tests, your Physiotherapist will create a customised treatment plan focused on reducing pressure, restoring movement, and preventing recurrence. The treatment plan typically includes postural advice, spinal manipulations to restore joint movement, massages to relieve tight muscles, neck exercises to improve movement, strengthening exercises, heat/ice therapy to manage pain, and the recommendation of a contoured pillow for proper sleeping support.
