About Neck Pain

If you are one of the many individuals who suffer from neck pain, our proven Physiotherapy approach may provide the solution you have been seeking.

Neck pain is a prevalent issue, with approximately one in 10 people experiencing it at any given time. This is unsurprising when we consider the activities of modern life, such as extended periods of sitting in front of a computer, prolonged periods of watching television, and an increasing incidence of poor posture, especially forward head posture.

Problems within the neck can also cause headache, shoulder pain, TMJ or jaw pain, pins and needles in the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome and upper back pain.

If you frequently experience any of the following symptoms, we recommend that you contact us for a thorough assessment:

  • Persistent neck pain in the morning
  • Stiffness in the neck while reversing in the car
  • Clicking neck noise when turning
  • Constant aching neck muscles
  • Tingling in the fingers or hands

Causes of Neck Pain

The most prevalent cause of neck pain is poor posture. To understand how poor posture affects the neck, we must first recognise the importance of proper spinal alignment.

Your head weighs about 5 kgs and in normal alignment it is very carefully balanced on top of your seven neck bones (vertebrae).  Your muscles work very hard to maintain this position and can easily withstand short periods of variation.  The problem arises when we assume awkward positions for prolonged periods, the fine balance is disturbed and the nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments and discs of your neck become strained and irritated.  In fact, the tension in your neck and shoulder muscles doubles for every 2-3 cm’s that your head is forward

As time passes, the strain and pressure on the neck accumulate, resulting in chronic discomfort and even the slightest changes in posture can have significant effects. Along with the pressures and demands of modern life, it’s no wonder that neck pain is so prevalent.

Whiplash, arthritis, and sports injuries are other common sources of neck pain.

Treatment for Neck Pain

Our comprehensive approach to neck pain treatment using Physiotherapy is effective. Following a complete examination, including history, orthopaedic, neurological, and spinal tests, our expert Physiotherapists recommend a customised treatment plan to relieve pressure, restore movement, and prevent recurrence. The approach may include postural advice, spinal manipulation for joint movement restoration, massages to ease muscle tension, neck exercises to increase mobility, strengthening exercises, heat/ice therapy to manage pain, and a contoured pillow to ensure proper sleeping support.
