What are Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are specifically designed to improve and correct the mechanics of tissues and joints in the feet. These devices are custom-fit to the individual’s foot and are placed inside the shoe like an insole. Orthotics function by correcting imbalances, strains, stresses, and pains in the feet, as well as providing relief from discomfort in other parts of the body, such as the knees, hips, and back.

A range of conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, flat feet, high arches, and bunions, can be effectively treated using orthotics. These conditions can result in discomfort and pain in the feet, as well as the legs, hips, and back. Orthotics work by correcting the mechanics of the feet, providing relief from pain, and enhancing mobility.

A qualified healthcare professional, such as a podiatrist or physiotherapist, prescribes orthotics after conducting a thorough assessment of the patient’s feet and related symptoms. The healthcare professional takes into account the patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and objectives when determining the most suitable treatment plan. Orthotics can be made from various materials, such as foam, rubber, and plastic, and can be custom-designed to fit the patient’s foot and specific condition.

Our Process

  1. Examination and Gait Assessment

To determine the current action and movement of your feet and lower limbs, your physiotherapist will conduct a comprehensive analysis of your feet, ankles, and gait. Additionally, we will gather information about your history, symptoms, circumstances, and any previous treatments you have undergone to determine the most appropriate approach for your unique needs.

  1. Computerised Gait Analysis
We use the latest technology to perform a highly precise scan of your movement. The Computerised Gait Scan collects information on the timing, pressure, and other unique characteristics of your gait, providing an in-depth analysis that is impossible to obtain through observation alone. Using this information, we can determine if orthotics can be beneficial to your treatment plan.
  1. Casting your Custom Orthotics
If we determine that orthotics would help you, we use the data from your gait analysis to produce a dynamic cast of each foot – eliminating the need for plaster or foam casting. The dynamic cast is then sent to a team of technicians who custom-manufacture a pair of orthotics precisely for your feet. A variety of orthotic styles are available, ranging from standard sizes to thicker orthotics for support during sports or lighter options that fit into dress shoes.
  1. Using your Orthotics
Once you have obtained your new orthotics, our trained physios will guide you on their best use, including an injury rehabilitation plan to assist in your recovery. Additionally, treatments may include hands-on physiotherapy and at-home exercises to complement your orthotics.
